Chapter Ten – Rylan

“I’m crashing your dinner.”

We were boarding the plane, ready to fly back to Boston. Luckily it wasn’t going to be as cold as it was when we left, but I’d miss the heat of Florida.

“No, you’re not. You have dinner with your mom,” Jolee pointed out. And she was absolutely right, but I wanted, needed to see Haley. It took everything in me to not message her every day, all day, while I was away. I wondered if the kiss before I left affected her the way it had affected me.

“I’m sure Mom won’t mind,” I replied as I took my seat beside Tyler. Mom was sitting in front of us and she turned around, a snarl on her perfectly made-up lips.

“I would too mind. It’s upsetting enough that my girls don’t want to join us. We’re all still on vacation until tomorrow at 8 am.”

Jolee, Sarah, and Keeley, who sat in the seats across the aisle from me, had the decency to look defeated. They quickly agreed to be at dinner tonight and reschedule with Haley. Mom insisted Haley join us, but we all knew she would decline.

But by them coming to dinner, I had no way to sneak out and see her without the entire group knowing. My brothers never paid enough attention to what was going on around them to notice if I was missing. And Mom was usually in the kitchen keeping track of five unruly adult men.

The plane ride was pretty quick, about three hours, and when we landed, the group of us gathered into the oversized van Mom had called.

“Hey, Mom?”

“Yes, Rylan?”

“I need to run by my apartment, but I’ll be back for dinner.”

“Okay. But please see if you can convince Haley to join us. And you better be on time.”

“Yes, ma’am.”

Closing my eyes, I leaned my head against the back of the seat, trying my damnedest to ignore the conversation behind me, but the girls had no sense of an inside voice. From what I could ascertain, Haley wasn’t responding to their texts or calls. I wanted to tell them that sometimes people were busy, but I didn’t want them to know that I was eavesdropping.

A slap sounded as a tanned hand landed on my shoulder. I pried my eyes open and turned to find Keeley leaning over the back of my seat.

“Do you think you can check on Haley? See if she responds to a message from you?”

“Guys, it’s only nine in the morning. We left at five-thirty. She’s probably still sleeping.”

I knew from experience that Haley was not a morning person and would sleep until noon if the opportunity presented itself. But the group didn’t need to know that intimate detail.

“But her phone is always on. Please.”

“Fine.”

Grumbling, I reached into my back pocket and lifted my phone, using my thumb to open the messaging app.

Me: Your friends are weird. Answer their messages.

“We’re not weird. Just concerned, Rylan.”

“Whatever. I’m trying to get a few more minutes of sleep, probably like your friend, if you don’t mind.
